From a NAS Replacement to a Complete Infrastructure Security Transformation

What started as a simple NAS upgrade turned into a full IT and security transformation. Discover how modern infrastructure can drive real business growth.

Sometimes clients come to us with what sounds like a simple request, and those are often the projects that turn into the most meaningful transformations.

That’s exactly what happened when a growing firm reached out to replace an aging Synology NAS. Their goal was straightforward: modern hardware, better reliability, and a clean data migration. But as we started asking questions and digging into the environment, it became clear that this was about much more than storage.

It was about security. Control. And making sure their technology was actually helping the business move forward.

We kicked things off the way we always do, by building a clear plan. Our Project Management team outlined the NAS deployment and data migration so everything would move smoothly, securely, and with minimal disruption. On the surface, the environment seemed functional. But once we looked under the hood, a few red flags appeared.

The existing NAS had no real permission structure. Every user could see and access every file. On top of that, Synology QuickConnect was enabled with minimal security restrictions, leaving the organization more exposed than anyone realized. It worked, but it wasn’t safe.

So we fixed that first.

We designed a role‑based access structure that actually matched how the business operates. Users were grouped by role, permissions were assigned intentionally, and access was limited to what each person needed to do their job, nothing more. Almost immediately, the environment became more secure, more organized, and easier to manage.

As the discovery continued, we uncovered another opportunity: email and collaboration. The firm was running on Google Workspace, but security controls were minimal, and centralized management was limited. For a growing organization, this created unnecessary risk and friction.

After evaluating their needs, we recommended migrating to Microsoft 365 Business Premium. Once the transition was complete, the difference was night and day. Stronger identity security, better collaboration tools, and enterprise‑grade controls all came together in a single, unified platform.

From there, we enrolled all company devices in Microsoft Intune. That allowed us to put compliance policies, security baselines, and endpoint protections in place across the board. Instead of managing devices reactively, the firm now had consistency, visibility, and control.

Only then did we circle back to where the conversation originally started, the new Synology NAS. Integrated into this modern environment, it became part of a secure, scalable system rather than a standalone piece of hardware.

What started as a NAS upgrade turned into a full reset of how the firm manages and protects its technology.

Today, with our Managed IT Services in place, the firm benefits from proactive monitoring, policy management, and Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR). Issues are caught early. Security is enforced consistently. And technology is no longer something they worry about—it’s something they trust.

Food for thought:

Technology shouldn’t slow your business down or keep you up at night. When done right, it becomes a competitive advantage.

If you’re ready to modernize your environment, strengthen security, and work with a team that looks beyond quick fixes, let’s talk. We’d love to help you turn your IT into something that truly supports your growth.
